In the United Kingdom, online and electronic signatures carry legal recognition and are governed by several legislative instruments. These include the Electronic Identification and Trust Services for Electronic Transactions Regulations (2016), the Electronic Communications Act of 2000 (ECA), and the UK’s adapted version of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions (eIDAS).
In the EU, since July 1, 2016, all the member states have adopted the eIDAS regulation, a regulation on the legal effect of electronic signatures.
